Extensive Periodontal Surgery Versus Laser Treatments
Once scaling is done, the gums are given time to heal for about two to four weeks and the oral cavity is reexamined to evaluate the success of the treatments and to be able to identify whether there is still a need for further care or periodontal surgery. Modern dentistry also practices laser treatments to reduce localized pocketing as they can kill many of the offending bacteria, eradicates the diseased tissue and encourages reattachment of the gums to the teeth. Laser treatments can be done without anesthesia and can also reduce the need for a more extensive periodontal surgery. However laser treatments can cost a dental patient a lot of bucks to spend. Gum disease that are already in severe cases are often referred to a periodontist – a dental specialist known to specialize in gum disease treatments.
